Gothing up

Hi guys!

I'm not sure what sort of response I'm likely to receive to this post; but here goes. When I was but a wee babybat, I used to really enjoy seeing and hearing about other Goths' day-to-day lifestyles, outfits etc. - you may laugh, but all of the 'more established' Goths seemed so glamorous and otherworldly that I was continually fascinated by what went on 'behind the scenes', if you will - how did that person make that outfit? What was their inspiration? How does this fit in with their lifestyle? I could hardly understand how people who looked and dressed like Adora BatBrat, Jillian Venters and our own dear VictorianKitty and Steph, could have 'normal', everyday lives when they looked as though they'd just emerged from some darkly whimsical parallell universe.

Somehow, with this in mind, I ended up taking a kind of photodiary when I was 'Gothing up' to go to a gig on Wednesday to amuse my still-a-babybat-at-heart self with the kind of behind-the-scenes snaps I would have been interested in as a younger Gothling. Now, I'm too scatty to be glamorous and too, uh, zany to be otherwordly, plus I don't really see myself as an 'established' Goth (too socially awkward... and you probably think I'm joking...), but I figured that the end result was kind of amusing (although not in the way I originally intended!), so I thought I'd put up the pics for you guys to see. ^^ OK, OK, so it's really just an outfit post with extra piccies, but what the heck...

Exhibit A

This is a selection of potential outfits scattered across my bed. Predominant colour: black. Is anyone surprised?

Exhibit B
Yikes. Me, fresh from work in my (very) casual gear. I had just walked two miles home to discover that I was locked out, then settled down to wash off my eyebrows and nom on some curry. Please forgive the lack of eyebrows; yes, I look like a baby alien.

Exhibit C
Not my most intelligent facial expression!

Exhibit D
Would anyone else care to post snaps of their 'letting my liquid eyeliner dry' face? Also, note my funny tufty hair!

Exhibit E
Getting there! This was about the fourth or fifth set of eyebrows I drew on, I do have snaps of some of the others but they make me look like a Vulcan and I would like to retain SOME dignity.

Exhibit F
Falls and all, the finished result. Only took two hours... >.<

Exhibit G
Ta-da!

Exhibit H
...

Exhibit I
My layered tights and boots.

Exhibit J
This is my life-saving little gas mask bag! It holds my phone, camera, cash, ID and tickets. Plus it has sparkles! Just... don't ask how much I spent on it, I resent spending so much cash on one small item. My boots, pictured above, are the most expensive item of clothing I've ever bought myself, but I can't quite justify spending lots of money (or what I think is lots of money, some of you probably have even more expensive tastes) on a HANDBAG.

Exhibit K
Obligatory full-length pic.

Being a Baby Bat, that is exactly how I am. I don't know why, but it fascinates me; what other, more refined, Goths do to get ready or come up with ideas for outfits or art or anything. Maybe, I think I can use some of it to make myself more....real.

Oh Amy my dear, lovely post. And I think that's the first time I've seen you with your bangs pinned back, and both looks suit you quite well I must say! And yes, I agree with your baby-bat philosophy. :) Thanks for posting.

Thanx for the sneak peeks ^.^ The bed covered in black, black, black everywhere is definately a familiar sight to me :) And I don't have a "waiting for my liquid eyeliner to dry" face so much as I have a "waiting for my liquid foundation to dry so I can start creating my designs" face. By the way, your make-up turned out fantastic! I love the blue :) And oh my Goth, I so want that gas mask bag! ;) You've definately quenched my curiosity for now. I also wondered for the longest time how the "more established" Goths as you put it, got themselves all together and what their inspirations were. I know just little ol' me makes a mess of things behind the scenes so I couldn't imagine what it took for some other people to get as fabulous as they do!

These posts are godsend for adult baby-bats like me who have NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE DOING. So, I love this, and more please! I too am fascinated watching the gothiness "as it happens". I like to think I'm learning things that way :)

I must say I love you with your hair pinned back and no eyebrows. I often find I prefer the no-eyebrows look. Is that wrong? Pushba with no eyebrows? LOVE IT!Adora BatBrat with no eyebrows? AMAZING! Amy with no eyebrows? GORGEOUS!

I think we all just fumble in the dark until we figure out a routine of sorts. Every single one of us "plays" in front of the mirror with make up. Every single one of us screws up eyeliner, eyebrows, falls, etc. Every single one of us flubs outfits. Every single one of us pricks ourselves a million times when sewing lace trim onto an otherwise boring skirt. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking that they don't.

I think the real secret behind Goths of all ages -- "established" or not -- is that we love being creative. We love experimenting. We love using ourselves as a blank canvas. We love pushing the envelop. Some of us, like myself, can't really push too hard because we have serious careers ... yet, we all go out and when we do WATCH OUT!

I'm still trying to figure out how to be a 39 year old career woman who happens to be a Goth. I'm trying to make it work and find the perfect balance. *shrug* It's going to take more experimenting and screwing up. My advice to all babybats -- just have fun! Be creative. But most importantly, be yourself.

Hugs from NYC!

Ha ha, Vulcan eyebrows.
Looking at pictures of people who've been "in the scene" for awhile influences babybats to dress more extremely.

I'm really tempted to write "Live Long and Prosper" somewhere in this post... XD

So amazing you chose this topic & title for today's post! I started following your blog about a week ago, and only yesterday Googled "gothing it up," hoping to find inspiration for putting a goth spin on a mundane wardrobe (Sidenote/idea: I'd love to see a goth take this on as a project. Kind of like those home makeover shows where an expert comes in and just rearranges the furniture, but it looks like a brand new place! Anyone want to take on that challenge?) Thirty-eight year-old (okay, 39 in a week) newbie babybat here. Should have been goth in back high school, but only had limited exposure to it (the scene was toddling at best back then), and some of it not so good. Happy to have found your blog, Amy. And love the outfits!

I love these kind of post. I was also a bit obsessed with seeing goth "behind the scenes" as you say. I still kind of am apparently as this post made me smile like an idiot.

I don't think it matters how new or familiar to the scene a person is, it's still fascinating to see how other people "goth up". Great post!

Getting a glimpse into the entire process of assembling anything, be it some sort of product or an outfit just makes the result all that more interesting, or at least that's how I see thing. Glad to get the behind the scenes look.

That bag is quite possibly the greatest accessory I've ever seen. It is all kinds of awesome. I'm so jealous.

Great post indeed! I love reading about the day-to-day lives of the people who I find inspirational. I'd be following them around with a camera all day if I could haha!
And, you make a beautiful baby alien ;) <3

My curiousity for what people are wearing/where they got it is only a bit related to my gothishness. it's mostly because I'm a nosy bitch. xP

I loooove eyebrowless pics!!! I am eyebrowless as well and I only let my closest friends see me without eyebrows. I love it when I see others without eyebrows. It's a striking look and I just love it so so so much thank you for sharing your eyebrowlessness lol sorry for the ramble

I'm STILL intimidated by people with amazing OTT gothic style, and I've been dressing this way for 10 years. I always feel so underdressed and under-made up whenever I see an amazing picture of the people you mentioned above or someone like Mana, and I'm still learning a lot of new tips and tricks to pull off a flawless look. But I figure almost everyone is intimidated by someone else, and all one can do is find the look that works best for you.

1. I agree with Kitty

2. That purse is so cool in a very strange way... And gas mask... Must resist making Doctor Who comment...

3. I like the behind the scenes stuff because it helps with the "How do I actually look like a goth?" part. Even if I try... Everyone looks more gothic than me! I think I understand why so many babybats wear only black all the time and have the not-so-good thick black eyeliner and whiteface. It may scream "Wannabe" but it screams "Goth wannabe".

E said...

Ooo, I agree wih Teresa, and want to add that every time I see someone in obviously brand-name goth clothing, even if it does make them look like an uninspired mallgoth, I automatically assume they look more alternative (and therefore cooler; I have always equated "alt fashion" with "cool") than me, who only shops mainstream stores and secondhand. Then I have to come home and read a bit of GCS and Ultimate Goth Guide to make myself feel better.

Also, thanks for the peek behind the scenes! (I know the bed disappearing under a mound of rejected outfit ideas is a common occurence in my room.) And I covet your boots. Covet covet covet.

Lovely pictures ^^

Is your skirt PVC? And is it a Moonmaiden one? x

I loved the post! Every few ears I decide to shake up my eye makeup - I'm right in the middle of figuring out how to get color in there. I love the blus and the way that looks on you. I may steal the idea.

ultimategothguide said...

@ LovleAnjel - that blue shadow is from Stargazer, if it's any help. ^^

@ Anonymous - yes, it's PVC, but not MoonMaiden; I got it for £5 from a vintage and retro store.

@ E - I know what you mean 100% about automatically assuming that other Gothy types always look 'more alt'. I'm terrible for doing that myself!

Boots are here: http://www.attitudeclothing.co.uk/product_25422-85-2059_New-Rock---710-S3-Boot.htm but they only seem to do them in silver now, not purple. :-(

@ Anonymous - in that case, I will be sure to post eyebrowless pics more often! Eheheh....

@ ozzie.oxide - thank you! :-D

p.s. Oh god, your getting ready is so much more organised than mine..:P I just toss clothes in the air till I find something :P

@ The Green Fairy - from DV8 Fest, I can't remember the name of the trader, something Latex I believe... toally unhelpful I know... I will try and look him up for you.

Funny you should say that, my skin is terrible at the moment, I'm wearing like six inches of foundation in these pictures! But sure, haha, I'd love to! ^^
