Dark and Goth-friendly music #14: Goth'n'roll

Finishing off the last of the metal-based 'dark' genres, which will probably come as a relief to the elder/trad Goths out there. Judging from the response to my last music post, however, the majority of Goths (visiting this blog, at least) do have some interest in metal, whether they like one or two bands or consider it a favourite genre.

Love metal
'Love Metal' is the title of the fourth album by the Finnsh rock band HIM, and also the term that the band came up with to describe their type of music. Many younger Goths and mallgoths mistake HIM's sound for Goth rock, which it isn't, but there are a lot of Goths from all age ranges who enjoy their music. Their sound is dark and melancholy and their imagery and lyrics reflect that, which is probably why they have experienced such lasting popularity in the Goth scene.

Industrial black metal
This sub-genre was created with black metal bands incorporating Industrial elements into their sound; pioneers included Mysticum, Thorns and Blut Aus Nord. However, the band most Goths will commonly associate with this subgenre is Psyclon Nine, an aggrotech band who incorporated more industrial metal elements into their sound over time.

Cyber metal
Cyber metal is the bastard lovechild of thrash and Industrial metal, combining the aggressive guitars of thrash with harsh Industrial-esque electronics. Bands listed on Last.fm as 'cyber metal' include Sybreed, T3CHN0PH0B1A, Ensoph, Illidiance, The Kovenant, Herrschaft, The Sin:Decay, Plague Project, NeuroTecH and XE-NONE.

Neo-classical metal
This is a subgenre of heavy metal that is heavily influenced by classical music. Notable performers include Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Symphony X, Stratovarius, Versailles, Concerto Moon, Narnia, Rhapsody of Fire, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Dark Moor and Artension.

Goth'n'roll
Goth'n'roll is the unofficial term used by some in the scene to describe the Goth-rock-meets-rock-and-roll-meets-glam-meets-metal sound of bands such as The 69 Eyes. There is much debate amongst Goths about whether or not these bands can be considered Goth, but nonetheless many Goths will own at least one CD from a band on this list. Goth'n'roll bands include: Agony, Lacrimas Profundere, Type O Negative, Reflexion.

Love Metal! YES! hehe .. HIM was one of the earlier bands I got into. Finland has a lot of good rock and metal bands. Ever heard of the famous glam rock band Hanoi Rocks? Yep, Finnish. The 69 Eyes are also a good Goth rock band, but not necessarily love metal.

I love all those genres!! Have you ever heard of avantgarde black metal? It's amazing! listen to Arcturus band ! :) (I deeply recommend the song "Starcrossed") ♥

Hmm, it should be noted here that, except industrial black metal, these names are descriptive only. Love metal does not truly exist, that's only how Ville Vallo described his music...

Cyber metal is just a shorter way of saying Thrash/industrial metal.

Bands listed under Neo-classical label are simply Progressive metal.

Dammot amy, stop making me feel like a bad goth because i have no interest in 80% of goth music! I think i can attribute it to my sensitive hearing, high-pitched instruments like synth and metal guitar give me a headache. How the fuck I can put up with opera I'll never know.

Let me do a guest post on goth operas and musicals so I don't feel so terribear. x3

What's wrong with 20% Goth music and some opera? Sounds Gothy enough to me. XP

I am awaiting your post. Go write. ^^
