Vlogger Spotlight: TheAlternativeDrug

I have the all-round lovely Darling Violetta to thank for introducing me to this relatively new vlogger. I am addicted to TheAlternativeDrug (see what I did there?) ever since I was sent a link to her fabulous video Why Be Alternative?

As much as I'd like to ramble on some more about the insights of this 23-year-old British vlogger, I think the video speaks for itself:

Being 'alternative' as opposed to trying to fit a specific label is a topic that (as you may have noticed) has recently interested me a lot, and this video went a long way towards reassuring me that not fulfilling every single bit of criteria for a specific subculture shouldn't be frustrating but rather liberating.

You can find TheAlternativeDrug's channel here.

Wow, she's really wonderful! Very amusing, smart and articulate. I've grown to love the word "alternative" as well.

I know that we're on hiatus right now, but could you do something on The BatCats? :-P

Hi Amy! I'm a kind of mixed Goth- I'll wear all Goth, Emo, Scene and Punk styles and listen to all kinds of music that is classed as rock, alternative or metal! I'm 11 years old and LOVE the dark side! I was just wondering if you could read my blog? Here's the link if you want to read it... http://imsogothic-gothicgalha2.blogspot.co.uk/
Thanks and bye!

I liked the fact she described 'alternative' to dip toes into anything that's different from the mainstream in the 'alternative stream'. To me, It's more freedom and diversity than putting yourself into a pigeonhole and limiting your individuality by stereotypes and group labels within the alternative culture.

That is how I have always felt. Unable to fit into a box, when my interest in music, and style are so diverse. I personally have never had anyone critisize my style or interests. I just flow with what I love. Ofcourse there will always be those who wont accept such diversity within certain sub/cultures. The last time I came across someone who did critisize me was in middle school 8 years ago. I have friends that are interested in other sub/cultres metalhead, punk, rockabilly, emo, goth, cybergoth and so forth. Never have I had a problem with any of them. What brings us together is that we are all into the alternative community. If you want to stick to only one sub/culture go right ahead, as long as it brings happiness to you. I've always thought why limit yourself? When there is so much to taste out there. I will never judge someone based on what they do or don't wear, or what they do or don't listen to. We are all just human. Wether I choose to speak to someone will be based on their personality. Truthfully I never knew how many close minded people there were in the alternative community til just recently. Don't get me wrong I'm also a human with flaws, and I've made many mistakes, still do. I was not always as open minded. If there are people who can't accept it that's they're problem. All I can say is live, and let live. Please excuse my long comment.
